Luton campus redevelopment project Q&A

Where will the new student services building be built?

The building will be situated on the Park Square campus in Luton between the Park Square Learning Resources Centre and the Vicarage Street building. The adjacent buildings will also be linked to the new building via high level walkways.

This new building will form the centre of the Park Square campus and become the main entrance to the campus.

When is it scheduled to open?

Demolition of existing buildings is due to start in January 2009.

Construction is due to start on the site in March 2009.

The building is scheduled to be completed in the Academic Year 2010-11.

What will be in the building?

The building will be the home of all student-facing activities and services for students on the Luton campus, including:

  • Reception desk
  • 240-seat bookable lecture theatre, available externally for conferences and events.
  • Exhibition space for student displays etc.
  • Informal learning spaces for our students.
  • Students’ Union support services, executive offices and bar.
  • Restaurant and café.
  • Senior Management Team offices.
  • The building will occupy approximately 6042 sq m internally across three storeys plus a mezzanine floor.

How environmentally-friendly will the building be?

The objective for the building is to have 10+% renewable energy generation.  Additionally, the building will be mostly naturally ventilated.

The project team are currently aiming towards a BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’ and are fully committed to designing the most energy efficient building and services to meet the University’s needs.

The BREEAM family of assessment methods and tools are all designed to help construction professionals understand and mitigate the environmental impacts of the developments they design and build.

What disruptions will there be to local routes?

Disruption during construction will be kept to a minimum. However, where this is not possible, alternative routes will be clearly indicated. It's not possible at the moment to say when a particular route will be closed but as construction progresses the University or its contractors will communicate any changes to access routes as appropriate.

What will the building be called?

At the moment no final decision has been made as to the name of the building.  However, we are interested in receiving suggestions. If you would like to suggest a suitable name, please contact the Press Office on press.office@beds.ac.uk
