There is an exciting range of societies on the Luton campus. Please see the list below to read what societies we have available:

How to join a society:

If you have any questions or queries about societies on the Luton Campus, or would like to join any of them, please contact Cherrelle Emanuel (Student Activities Assistant) via email at cherrelle.emanuel@beds.ac.uk, via telephone on 01582 743930, or simply come into the Students’ Union in Luton to see her in person.


How to set up your own society:

If we do not have a society that you like, and you have a group of 10 or more other students who would also like to join that group, we could help you start a new society. Simply download the form here, fill it in, and then email it to us or drop it off in the Students’ Union.

Societies we currently have in Luton are:

ACADEMIC

Academic societies are those who students from the various academic courses have set up, to aid there learning and encourage student involvement.

ACCOUNTING SOCIETY

The Accounting Society facilitates the development of students, enhances their academic experience, brings Accounting students together, and develops positive collaborations with other societies.

COMPUTING SOCIETY

The computing Society facilitates the student’s development, helping their academic experience

LAW SOCIETY

The Law Society is one of the biggest societies on campus. It aims to arrange activities, produces a bi-weekly newsletter, and arranges an annual Law Ball celebration.

MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS SOCIETY

The Marketing Communications Society offers support and career advice to students, arranges events and meetings, and invites external guest speakers to come in and talk about Marcoms.

RESEARCH STUDENTS SUPPORT GROUP (RSSG)

The RSSG is a support group for all other research students at the University of Bedfordshire. It arranges regular networking meetings and events for all research students belonging to the society, so if you are a research student, what are you waiting for?

INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERS (IEEE)

The IEEE is a group of students made up of University of Bedfordshire IEEE students. They provide students with the opportunity to network and share ideas, with other students and organisations

MBA SOCIETY

The MBA society is made up of students who are studying MBA’s at the University of Bedfordshire. They have regular meetings to promote net working and share ideas.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SOCIETY

The Psychological Society is open for Psychology students of all levels as well as students interested in Psychology. We have regular meetings, guest lectures, activities, book sales and more. Last year we visited the Psychoanalysis exhibition in the Science Museum in London, raised money for the red nose day and had a very interesting guest lecture of Dr.Joseph Adonu. We are planning much more for the coming year so don't hesitate and join us!"

CULTURAL

We have many different societies from different cultures who all want to share and celebrate their interests with all students.

AFRICAN CARIBBEAN SOCIETY (ACS)

The ACS (African, Caribbean society) is a diverse student society that bring together people of African and Caribbean decent, discussing important matters of today, yesterday, and tomorrow. We not only try and get Africans and Caribbean’s together but we also try and get other races involved. We plan events for special occasions e.g. Black History month and various countries independence day. What we aim to achieve is to firstly bring students together, make them understand the importance of their roots and hold some very successful events that will give the students an opportunity to have something to do whilst at University. We encourage students to get involved not only in attending events and discussions but to give input on how we can make it better for them. Because that is what we do, we do it for you, the students.

GHANA SOCIETY

The Ghana society has a number of events and activities throughout the year. They have regular meetings throughout the year where Ghanaian students and those interested in Ghanaian culture come together to discuss events and issues.

PAKISTANI STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (PSA)

The PSA aims to unite all Pakistani students at the University of Bedfordshire, and acts as a forum for students to discuss issues and challenges they face, along with organising various events.

ARAB SOCIETY

The Arab society is here to help native Arab students settle into University Life. Along with other students who are interested in learning about traditional, cultural Arabian lifestyle, celebrating the diverse Middle Eastern countries.

FAITH

Faith societies are there for students who share the same faith can meet up weekly to discuss up and coming issues and celebrate customs. These societies aren’t just for those of similar faiths but are open to those who are interested in learning more about other faiths.

CHRISTIAN UNION (CU)

The Christian Union meets weekly to share faith in the Bible, help answers any questions that students may have about Christianity, arrange events and activities, and bring in guest speakers. All students are welcome to come along!

ISLAMIC SOCIETY

The Islamic Society aims to increase knowledge and appreciation of Islam, to provide opportunities for Muslims to socialise and participate in various activities during the year, and to support new and current Muslim students on campus.

BELIEVERS LOVEWORLD CAMPUS MINISTRY

They are a society who wishes to take God’s Divine presence to the University. Helping students to be the best they can be.

OUT CRY SOCIETY

The outcry society is of multi cultural and multi faiths. They aim to provide prayer support to fellow students. They take part in organising musical celebrations.

RECREATIONAL

Recreation societies are made of a verity of activities. Students have turned their hobbies, activities, interested and believes into a society are interested into a society to share with others. These societies encourage students to try something new, learn new skills etc all contributing to the student experience.

ANIME & MANGA SOCIEY

This society is for anyone who likes to watch or read Anime and Manga. Even if you have never heard of us, you are welcome to come along and find out more!

ART OF LIVING FOUNDATION

The art of living foundation society provides young adults between the ages of 18-35 with tools to achieve their ideal life. This programme empowers young people to eliminate stress, rid the system of negative emotions develop strong social and leadership skills, heighten awareness and increase mental focus. It changes young people to reach their highest potential and has already made a difference to thousands across the world.

As a nongovernmental Organisation (NGO), the foundation works in special Consultative status with the economic and social council of the United Nations. In Just over 25 years, 20 million people have attended art of living and over 300 million people have been impacted by the service project and human Italian work that the foundation has conducted.

Chess Club

The chess society is a new one. We are looking for students who are interested in chess both recreationally or competitively. Even if you have never played, please feel free to join.

LGBT

We are the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Society, but we are open to anyone. We mainly operate as a support network for LGBT students, providing friendship, social events and advice. During term time we meet once a week. We have a Facebook page as Luton.LGBT, which allows you to find out about meetings as as through the University.

RAISE & GIVE (Rag) SOCIETY

The RaG Society is for all students who are interested in fundraising whilst having fun, making a difference, and raising much needed money for good causes.

SINGING & PERFORMANCE SOCIETY

The singing and performance society is an exciting newly established society full of friendly and talented people. Our diverse group is based around one practise session a week which includes solo singing, choral singing and dancing! We work towards performing around the University; for organised events as well as putting on our own show in each year. We worked extremely hard for our first show in May 2011. It was an amazing success of solo and group performances, which made our society popular and established within the university. As well as practising as a group, we also go on social trips – our first to see west end show “We Will Rock You”. We also have nights in as a group playing Singstar and watching musicals.
We sing mainly popular modern songs and songs from musicals, but are looking to branch out further with new songs and new members! We welcome students of all abilities of singing and dancing! UoB VOLUNTEERING SOCIETY

Our mission is promoting and developing volunteering within the University. Our society works closely with the volunteer department. They are committed to promoting diversity and strive to encourage all university students to get involved.

Amnesty International Student Society

Amnesty International is a national organisation whose main aim is to stand up for humanity and human rights. If this is something you believe in then come join our group.

Break dance Society

The break dance society encourages students of all dance levels to come along to the training and give it a go. Whether your familiar with break dance or never tried it before, you’re all welcome.

Poetry Society

We are a society who showcases different forms of poetry to the University community. We welcome all students, those who appreciate poetry, who write their own or those who wish to try something new.

POETS, ACTORS, WRITERS SOCIETY (P.A.W.S)

The P.A.W.S is about getting students together who are passionate about poetry, acting and writing scripts. At regular meetings we record our art, where we will then show case our students work.

Global Improvement Organisation

The Global Improvement Organisation aim to help make the world a better place. They want to provide a place for students to express their opinions on Global Issues.

Promise Gospel Choir

We are a Choir society who enjoys singing. Music is how we express ourselves and unite as one. We welcome all students, so come along to our sessions. Give us a try.

Tamil Society

Tamil is a language spoken in India, Sri Lanka and Singapore. It is one of the longest surviving classical languages in the world. The tamale society is here for those who wish to lean or practice.

Bedfordshire Pride

Bedfordshire's Pride is a fun new social group for students with disabilities. We arrange outingsour members to go to popular venues such as The Galaxy and The Hat Factory. We also have a fortnightly 'get together in the halls' where there are games and snacks so members can get to know each other. All students with disabilities are welcome so come along and have fun; you wouldn't want to miss it!!

STREET DANCE SOCIETY

The Street Dance Society is for experienced dancers and dance enthusiasts alike! We hold weekly classes consisting of:
• Warm up at the start of class
• Choreography taught by one of the Co-founders
• Freestyle session and a short cool down at the end of class
We plan trips to annual events on the dance calendar (mainly based in London) for everyone to experience the thrill of spectating. In May 2011, we collaborated with a UoB Fashion Student to successfully put on a Fashion & Talent Show called "HEART: What does yours look like?" held at Luton's Chicago's Rock Cafe. We hope to expand our SDS community and welcome ALL Beds Students. For the 2011/2012 academic year SDS hope to organise a second event to provide an opportunity for members to perform.

SPORT

The sports clubs here at UBSU are for the sports that do not compete in BUCS. Theses sports are open to all students who would like to try something different or just keep fit and healthy.

BADMINTON

We have a mixed Badminton team for men and women, which trains recreationally but does not yet compete against other Universities. Experience is not necessary as all students are welcome, so if you are a budding player, get yourself down to training!

BOXING

We have a mixed Boxing team for men and women, which trains recreationally for fun and fitness, but serious boxers can fight competitively. Experience is not necessary as all students are welcome, so if you want to keep fit and box, come along!

CHEERLEADING SOCIETY

The Cheerleading team is new on the Luton campus. They aim to offer support to Luton’s sport teams when they are playing Home games, and cheer at other events such as Varsity. If you would like to keep fit whilst having a great deal of fun, come along and join us!

KICK/THAI BOXING

We have a mixed Kick / Thai Boxing team for men and women, which train recreationally for fun and fitness. Experience is not necessary as all students are welcome, so come and join us!

KORFBALL

Korfball is one of our newest sports at the University of Bedfordshire. It is a mixed sex team sport, and is coached by Luton Hatters Korfball Club. It currently competes in BUCS and community club tournaments. Experience is not needed so come along and give it a go!

MARTIAL ARTS SOCIETY (MAS)

There are a number of Martial Arts available on the Luton campus. Both men and women are welcome to get involved, and students of any experience level are welcome.

SWIMMING

We have a new recreational mixed Swimming team which train locally. You must be able to swim and commit to regular coached swimming sessions. This is also an ideal way to keep fit if you play on other teams too!

TENNIS

We have a mixed sex Tennis team which train recreationally. All students are welcome to come along and join the team, and it is a great way to keep fit for students who are on other teams.

TAE KWON DO

Tae Kwon DO. We have a mixed team of males and females. Students of all levels are welcome to come along and have a go.
