Student Officer (Part Time)

 

Student Officer Job Descriptions 

Student officer positions are voluntary, part-time, and open to all students who will be studying during their term of office.

Key skills and qualities for these roles include:

- Enthusiasm and commitment
- Ability to manage voluntary work alongside study

Key Student Officer responsibilities

Represent students

Ø       Attend monthly meetings of the Officers Committee
Ø       Attend monthly meetings of relevant operating committee, each student officer sits on one appropriate committee
Ø       Attend all General Meetings, Student Representative Councils and the relevant Campus Student Representative Councils
Ø       Represent UBSU at National Union of Students (NUS) conferences where and if appropriate
Ø       Attend Officer residential training in June, Officer training events in September/October and contribute to the annual strategic planning process and development of priority campaigns for the coming year
Ø       Be available to see students in the Students’ Union for an agreed period (1-2 hours)

Special Project

Ø       Organise projects, events or similar activities during the course of the year
-          Two projects for Officers elected at the General election (March)
-          One project for Officers elected at the By-election (October)
Ø       Meet the Officer’s paired mentor once per week to assess progress and problems
Ø       Contribute to the annual Officers’ report to members detailing UBSU activities over their year in office

Support UBSU

Ø       Work voluntarily for UBSU, contributing (on average) six hours per week during term-time
Ø       Support UBSU events and activities during Freshers’, International and Diversity Weeks as appropriate
Ø       Casually promote UBSU events, especially large events, to constituency
Ø       Support the annual UBSU student satisfaction survey by collection of data 

 Support offered by UBSU to Student Officers

 

Ø      Pairing with a Sabbatical Officer and/or member of UBSU staff to offer mentoring, support and advice as necessary
Ø      Meetings with the UBSU General Manager to offer mentoring, support and advice as necessary
Ø      Use of the Student Officers’ office, computers and other facilities as available in pursuit of Officer objectives
Ø      Access to University training courses as appropriate to the position
Ø      Support to attend NUS conferences and meetings as appropriate to the position
Ø      Enrolment on the University volunteering programme, leading to certification and other benefits if duties are fulfilled 

 Key portfolio responsibilities:

 

Campaigns Officer

 Help run campaigns that currently affect the student body

Ø       Support UBSU awareness initiatives
Ø       Develop a team of students to assist with UBSU campaigns
Ø       Sit on Welfare and/or Education committee

Disability Officer

 Represent students with a seen and/or unseen disability

Ø       Represent the views and needs of disabled students to UBSU and the University
Ø       Campaign for the rights of disabled students
Ø       Work with UBSU officers and staff to ensure the Union is inclusive of disabled students
Ø       Sit on the Diversity Committee
Ø       Attend University Equality Forum
Ø       Attend NUS Disability Conference as UBSU delegate

Entertainments Officer

Organise a diverse range of events for students

Ø       Contribute to the development different forms of entertainment that the SU can provide
Ø       Promote UBSU events to students on campus
Ø       Contribute to the organisation of large-scale events, e.g. May Ball
Ø       Encourage students to run their own events at UBSU
Ø       Liaise with the Venue and Events Manager
Ø       Sit on the Commercial Services Committee

EU Students’ Officer

 Represent the growing number of EU students and encourage engagement with UBSU

Ø       Represent the needs of EU students to UBSU and the University
Ø       Campaign where necessary on issues affecting EU students
Ø       Develop relevant events for EU students by working with the Commercial Services Committee
Ø       Sit on the Diversity Committee

International Students’ Officer

 Represent the growing number of international students and encourage engagement with UBSU

Ø       Represent the needs of international students to UBSU and the University
Ø       Campaign where necessary on issues affecting international students
Ø       Develop relevant events for international students by working with the Commercial Services Committee
Ø       Sit on the Diversity Committee

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) Officer

 Look after and promote the interest of lesbian, gay bisexual and transsexual students

Ø       Represent the views of LGBT students to UBSU and the University
Ø       Attend NUS LGBT conference as UBSU delegate
Ø       Sit on the Diversity Committee
Ø       Participate in the University Equality Forum

Mature Students’ Officer

 Ensure mature students are represented within UBSU and the University

Ø       Represent the views of mature students to UBSU and the University
Ø       Support the development of mature student groups/society
Ø       Sit on the Diversity Committee
Ø       Attend NUS Mature Student’s Conference as the UBSU delegate
Ø       Participate in the University Equality Forum

Please note that candidates must be 25 at the start of the elections

Minority Students’ Officer

 Ensure minority ethnic groups are represented within UBSU and the University

Ø       Contribute to the review and development of UBSU’s equal opportunities policy
Ø       Attend NUS Black students’ conference as NUS delegate
Ø       Promote events and activities to celebrate the University’s diverse culture
Ø       Support anti-racism campaigns, e.g. ‘kick it out’ campaign
Ø       Sit on the Diversity Committee
Ø       Participate in the University’s Equality Forum

Newspaper Editor

 Edit UBSU’s Newspaper and ensure diverse student participation in its production

Ø       Organise student contribution to the UBSU paper
Ø       Organise promotion of the newspaper
Ø       Organise recruitment of volunteers e.g. at Freshers’ Fayre
Ø       Edit articles to be included in the paper
Ø       Organise the distribution of the paper within the University
Ø       Work closely with VP Communication

Raise and Give (RAG) Officer

 Promote Raise and Give activities amongst the student body

Ø       Help organise and promote RaG events throughout the year
Ø       Develop new and creative ways for students to raise money for charity
Ø       Sit on the Student Activities committee

Sports Officer

 Support the development of sport at the University

Ø       Support the promotion of sport especially those outside the BUSA league
Ø       Develop an intramural sports programme to encourage participation
Ø       Promote the Athletic Union forum to teams and players
Ø       Sit on Student Activities department

Women’s Officer

Ensure women are represented within UBSU and the University

Ø       Represent the views of women to UBSU and the University
Ø       Raise awareness of issues affecting women
Ø       Attend NUS Women’s conference as the UBSU delegate
Ø       Support campaigns that affect the welfare of women students
Ø       Sit on the Diversity Committee
Ø       Participate in the University’s Equality Forum
