This year the NUS and Drinkaware are joining forces to raise alcohol awareness. This is because research has shown:
• Many 18-24 year olds think that it is socially unacceptable not to drink alcohol on a night out.
Remember whether you have a drink or not should always be your own choice, don’t feel you have to drink, or drink to excess, just because your friends are.
Drinking too much can lead to personal safety issues, academic problems, anti-social behaviour, crime (including cautions and convictions) and health problems to name but a few. These issues can cause both long and short term implications for you future studies and careers.
The Welfare and Advice service can provide you with help and advice on cutting down your alcohol consumption; we can provide you with free unit calculators and drink diaries to help with this. We can also help if you are affected by drinking too much, or if you are affected by someone else’s drinking.
• You can find general advice and tips on safe drinking at www.drinkaware.co.uk/facts/did-you-know/?

Why Let Good Times Go Bad?
• One in five young adults (21%) believe pressure from their peers influences them to drink more.
• almost a quarter (23%) believe their friends will ridicule them for drinking a non-alcoholic drink on a night out.
