DIVERSITY & EQUALITY

UBSU Diversity mission statement

UBSU recognises that everyone is different and therefore unique. We celebrate our diversity by promoting and maintaining an inclusive work and study community environment that offers opportunity and enables everyone to reach their full potential.

What is Diversity?
Diversity is about valuing individual difference. So diversity is much more than just another word for equality. A diversity approach aims to recognise value and manage difference to enable all students and staff to reach their full potential. Diversity challenges us to recognise and value all sort of differences in order to make the University a better place for everyone to learn and work.

What is Equality?
Equality is about making sure people are treated fairly and give fair chances. Equality is not about treating everyone in the same way, but it recognizes that their needs are met in different ways.
Equality focuses on those area covered by the law, namely the key areas of age, race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and pregnancy and maternity.
UBSU ensures that student and staff should not be unfairly discriminated against because of any of these factors and it contributes to creating a positive environment where discriminatory practices and discrimination no longer happen.

What is discrimination?
Discrimination is treating others less favourably because they belong to a group. According to the law discrimination could be direct as well as indirect. Discrimination done unintentionally or formulating policies where a particular group of population is less advantaged over the others is indirect discrimination.
