Feeling Waisted??

UBSU supports the 'Feeling Waisted' campaign

How many of us have ever looked in the mirror, or seen a photo, and not been happy with what we see? To lose weight, we often choose to change our eating habits or exercise more, but how often do we consider the ‘weighty’ effects of alcohol?

alcohol services for the community’s brand new campaign; ‘Feeling Waisted?’ shows exactly how these calories add up, and how just small changes to our drinking can make all the difference!

The majority of alcohol contains very little nutrition except calories. Not only do these calories make us gain weight, alcohol also prevents our bodies from burning fat. It’s like a ‘double whammy’; drinking not only makes you put on weight, but stops us losing it.

Jennifer Robus from the Safer Drinking Team says “Obesity levels in England are now reaching 1 in 4 adults , and among adults who drink, around 10% of their total calorie intake is used just in alcohol . These statistics are shocking, but there are minimal changes to our drinking we can make that have maximum impact on our waistline! The best way of cutting back is to ‘turn down the volume’ and save not only units, but calories as well. For example switching from a 5% lager to a 4% lager saves 1 unit & 50 calories per pint, and switching from a 13.5% wine to a 10.5% wine saves 2 units & 60 calories per bottle!”
