Question of the week

Question of the Week is a scheme where the entire sabbatical team go out and ask students about issues within the University. This was a new scheme this year and has proven a great success as we have had some great feedback. Here is what happened this year.

We asked what question they would like to ask the Vice Chancellor?

The sabbatical team went to both Luton and Bedford campuses to ask the questions to students as the VC question answers sessions were scheduled for both campuses. There was a good response from Bedford students, thanks to Tom Phillips efforts. The VC gave a lengthy presentation on how the league table work and there was a good amount of emphasis on question number 22 of NSS. In some students words the whole question answer session was to promote question number 22 of NSS.

Students asked many questions to the VC, about the facilities, accommodation, and redevelopment. Some students pointed out about the segregation between students. Some students in Bedford asked the VC about having no Bar at the Bedford campus. There were also questions about sports and other facilities.

The VC’s message was that students should not take their grievances on NSS, but they should approach the appropriate people and try to work out their problems in the university. If they are still unhappy they can approach him directly and he will try his best to get relief for them. He also said that it is for the student’s better prospects to have a good NSS outcome as the good they will grade the university the better they will get the fruits of it.

What you think of the university accommodation and what would you like to change about accommodation?

The students had a mix of response to the answers as most of the emphasis was on the facilities provided in the current accommodation. Majority of students were unhappy with the facilities, one of the major concerns were security and washing facilities. Students said that they should have equal facility across the institution and good value for money. A big number of students said there should be some sort of common rooms for students to socialize as they feel locked inside their rooms all the time. It was also mentioned by few students that there should be some sort of fitness equipment available at the accommodation. Internet was another big area of concern for the students as some of them said that they should have some sort of facility where they could watch tv too. Bute court was dubbed as the worst place to live as it was too noisy and insecure for students to live. Some students said that university accommodation is too expensive as compared to local market. There were a good number of students who were satisfied with the accommodations but suggested to improve the facilities to make them even better.
